In the UK there are approximately 37,000 house fires a year and around 200 fire related deaths. In the year Sept 2018, 38% of battery operated smoke alarms did not sound during a fire. When you only have minutes to escape from a house fire, smoke alarms can save your life. Keep you and your family as safe as possible by following our top tips.
Check traditional smoke detectors once a week
Set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget. However a smart smoke detector is best, as it alerts a monitoring station if smoke is detected, this can make all the difference if you are away from your home and not able to hear the alarm
Get a fire extinguisher
It can mean the difference between a small kitchen fire and the whole house going up in flames
Be careful where you smoke
Put all cigarette butts out in sand or water. Smoking is the number one cause of fire fatalities according to London-fire.gov.uk
Don’t overload electrical outlets
Thanks to modern technology we have so many devices plugged in all the time now. Always ask an electrician to install anything complicated and don’t overload your systems. Electrical short circuits are one of the most common causes of house fires.
Close bedroom doors
House fires can spread quickly when there are no barriers. Closing doors before you go to bed can give you precious extra seconds to escape a fire
Never leave a naked flame unattended
Especially when cooking or lighting candles.
Bulldog smoke and heat detectors are streamlined in design and fit any home. They have a significantly longer battery life of up to eight years, enabling easy and low-cost maintenance. By sensing rapid temperature changes in areas where they may occur, such as kitchens or attics, it activates an alarm when the temperature reaches 60°C (140°F) and start increasing rapidly. The detector also achieves superior smoke detection sensitivity levels by providing early warning of a developing fire. The detector transmits supervisory reports, including battery condition, to the wireless control panel or receiver at regular intervals – ensuring system integrity and functionality at all times.
Our smoke detectors are a cut above traditional smoke alarms because are linked to a monitoring station 24/7 and will act as your first line of defence in the event of a fire. If they detect smoke or heat they sound an alarm but also notify our monitoring station. This can be invaluable if you are away from your home and a fire starts. Our monitoring station alerts the fire brigade for you and considering most fires happen between the hours of 10pm and 6am you are likely to be asleep. So while you are in the land of nod and unaware a fire has started you can rest assured that help it on its way.
